Oh Oh......scratch & dent display cover

This happened few weeks ago and I'm tired of looking at it.
Any ideas of how I can fix these nasty scratches?
I thought about some Scotch Brite pads....or buff with 600-1000 grit wet dry sandpaper?
Replacement of the display shell?

I think your best bet at a perfect repair would be to replace the lid. If you try to buff it out no matter how fine the grit is, you are going to see swirl marks and I highly doubt it will do anything to those scratches. Even if you were able to get rid of those scratches you would not be able to make that dent unnoticeable. Those are pretty deep scratches and down to the bare metal in a couple of spots and will not come out with buffing and if you try scratch remover from an auto store, you will be able to see the lines still. That is pretty unfortunate and I bet next time you will check what's behind your Mac before you flip the lid open hehe. Good luck.

Sorry but I wasn't able to find anything on replacing the shell part of the screen. Everything I found was for replacing the actual screen and not the aluminum piece. You should call Apple and ask what you can do and if under Apple Care still, you may be able to send it in or have a new part ordered and bring it to an Apple Store to have it replaced.

Sand paper and fine sand blasted aluminum don't go together well at all! Time to put sticker on that thing!

The surface of the laptop is brushed aluminum...which means it has a texture to it. All the Scotch Brite pad or wet-dry sandpaper would do (regardless of how fine the grit is)...will smooth out the brushed aluminum texture...and most likely make any appearance issues worse!

I know that you said that you can live with the scratches...but what's going to prevent more scratches (or dents) from happening in the future?

Instead of a replacement item...maybe consider a protective sleeve or cover. And in case your next question is..."What sort of protective item should I buy?"...check this out:
