Scrambled external hard drive

When I switched to a Mac I reconfigured my Windows external hard drive so I could read files on my Mac. Now I find that old Microsoft Works and Pagemaker files are unreadable on my Mac or on a PC. Can they be recovered? Thanks for any ideas.

Just how did you reconfigure your external hard drive? It would help if you told us exactly what you did. What format did you use on the external?
