I just picked up a copy of Snow Leopard for my 20" iMac. After the update I checked my system folder and it is 4.5 gb. I did not check before the update, is that a normal size for the system folder? It seems really large to me. All my programs are kept in the Applications folder, it's 23 gb.

Way... way too many specs to list.
I gained a bunch of drive space in my Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade.

I did NOT, however, do a standard upgrade, I did custom and ditched a bunch of stuff.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
It depends on what you have one your mac....I have a relatively small applications folder (3.5GB), and my system folder is 3.86GB due to me only having a few supporting items related to applications which belong in there.
Off memory they are files/components that are related to iLife, but I am sure that if I had a good scan through that I would find supporting items for many applications in there.
The original size of the system folder on a clean install would still have been around the 3.5GB size.
Having so many applications on your system, 4.5GB sounds about right.

After a quick scan.... frameworks 1.66GB, private frameworks 489mb, Fonts 212mb, core services 165mb.
So that's around 2.5GB just in 4 of the larger folders.

Can you start from scratch with the Snow Leopard disc?
Or is it a step upgrade, install Leopard and then Snow?

I almost did a clean install for Snow Leopard. But, I started thinking that I may lose some of the programs that I use that came with my iMac, like iDVD and iWeb.

Is it true, since I only got the $25 single user Snow Leopard, (not the box set on for $170) that it would not load the iLife stuff like iDVD and iWeb with a clean/new full install?
