Don't laugh. BUT, how come when I click the globe on my dock for Google Earth a little hard drive icon appears on my desktop? Did I do something wrong when I downloaded Google Earth or this just a Mac thing? I'm new to Apple so be kind with a straight answer please.

You probably dragged the disk image into your dock, so when you click on it it opens the disk image which contains the application. To install most applications in OS X you need to first open the disk image, then find the program icon inside and drag it to your applications folder. Then you can place it in your dock and it will launch the application when you click on it.
