Almost always unrecognized RAM is a compatibility issue - I'd look for another Apple compatible RAM

In the early slot-loading iMacs that I have worked on the RAM slots have been very tight. I've found that seating the chip took a lot more force than expected and you had to be sure the locking levers are snapped in place. Also, you might try putting the chip in the other slot just to see if that makes a difference.
If it's not the seating of the chip and you are not hearing the startup warning bells then it is a compatibility problem.
