Some (un-official) reviews are starting to filter through and a lot are mentioning the screen not being as good as the iphone and specifically that it is very dark making some darker scenes almost un-watchable..

Has anybody heard any more on this? Are there issues with the screen on the touch?

I've heard that the blacks aren't "as black" compared to the iPhone. As in, the blacks look more gray on the iTouch than the iPhone.

there have been a LOT of complaints about the screen quality with this thing. for more information, check out the iPod forums at iLounge or macrumors. appears to be a hardware error that occurred in production, one that will hopefully be fixed in the coming weeks.

Wow, pretty scathing review over at ilounge, the screen issues could be a show stopper.

I now find myself very frustrated, I want a better portable video solution than my 5.5g pod offers but feel that the touch may have too many crosses and not enough ticks. The problem is that Apple's strategy is clearly flash based with focus on the thinner the better so I doubt they would fatten it up slightly to give us more storage and better batterey life.

It could be that I am now waiting for a non-apple alternative.......

Just read something by a LCD specialist over at the Apple forums. Turns out the pressure on the company that produces the screens led to them skipping a lengthy step in the manufacturing process. The anti-glare coating was either skipped altogether or was applied haphazardly, which is why screen quality can differ from one unit to the other, and why the iPhone's screen looks so much better.

Overall, it would seem prudent to wait a few weeks for demand by both consumers and Apple to go down before purchasing a Touch. That way you can be sure that you get a screen that isn't missing the anti-glare treatment.

B*gger! I picked mine up from Bluewater tonight and it has the problem. I can only describe it as like watching an LCD from an extreme angle with dark scenes looking solarised.

Not sure what to do as if the batch is affected the replacement could be just the same, I have made a genius bar reservation for tomorrow.
