I've been playing the Halo demo on my MacBook (under Rosetta). Obviously it's very choppy, but I wondered how much smoother it is on the universal binary? Is it still very choppy on the MacBook. I'd like to play at 1280*800.

i dont play games on my mac, yet (cos i'll put xp on it soon).

BUT - i would have thought with halo (1) it would run ok. but hopefuly someone else who knows a bit more about the universal stuff and performance difference will give you a more detailed answer. cheers

I tried Halo on my PC a while back with a AMD 3400+/gig of ram/ATI x800pro and was unhappy with the performance...

Tried the demo last night on my new core2duo Imac with a gig of ram and the x1600 card.... seemed about the same performance wise.

I just think MS/Bungie or whoever did the ports, did a bad job at optimizing it.

Thanks.

The demo is the PowerPC version only and so would be running under Rosetta. I'm wondering what it might be like on the Universal binary.

I ran Halo on a 3400+ AMD64 and FX5900u and it was choppy when the action got hot as well. The PC version was badly done, although the online multiplayer was excellent.

i run the demo alot on my core duo and it works fine acctualy with less lag than on windows

ohh apple says its in universal binary

http://www.apple.com/games/articles/2003/11/halo/

Apple says:
Universal BinaryA Universal Binary for the retail version of the game is available from MacSoft. This allows the game to run natively on Intel Macs.

Now if you check the demo, it is dated June 2005, before any Intel Mac existed. The demo runs under Roseta - I'm impressed it manages to run on your machine so smoothly with only 512MB of RAM. What GPU do you have?

The 17" 1.83ghz iMac doesn't ship with an X1600, it ships with the GMA950

THE CORE DUO EARLY 2006 SHIPPED WITH THE ATI RADEON 1600

heres a pic to prove it

Only the NEW $999 iMacs have the GMA950. The first Intel iMacs were ATI Radeons like iMacmatt stated.

That's so unfair... why couldn't they do the same with the MacBook..? :blind:

Well that'll be why the game runs so well, it's obviously very GPU bound.

I don't know if this will help at all, but the PPC Halo runs ok on my G4 Mac Mini, it's playable. It runs very smooth though on my 1.8Ghz G4 (Modded G4 Digital Audio) with ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I have an Intel Mini also but with the PPC version of Halo, it's choppy on the Intel Mini. I have not tried the Universal. Since I own the game, I will look into upgrading it and get back to you.
