iPad Safari image rotation

The version of Safari on the iPad is unusual in that it doesn't seem to take account of the EXIF Orientation flag when displaying images. As an example see Photos for Record 4573
which is a landscape image (600x450) but with EXIF defining it as being portrait.

This image is rendered upright by most browsers I have tried (including iPhone, Android and Symbian phone browsers) but on the iPad the tree is lying on its side.

Does anyone know whether browsers are obliged to take orientation into account (in which case iPad Safari has a bug) or whether rendering of orientation is undefined?

Thanks

- Malcolm
