Ok I think my hdd is failing. It is making a very faint clicking sound about every minute. I am going to buy a new drive but wondered if macs prefer a certain brand. Also can I use time machine to copy my OS on to the new drive? I don't have the original install cd's. If not how can I clone the drive? Thanks.

I recomend WD black hdd. They are warrentied for a full 5 years and I have found them t be very reliable. As for cloning I use Carbon Copy Cloner. Get it here-http://www.bombich.com/
hope this helps.

Sometimes HDD make the odd noise. Go into Disk Utility and select the top listed drive. What does S.M.A.R.T. Status have to say about the drive?
