I plan to overwrite my OS when I install Leopard, but not want to lose the VMWare Virtual machine I created. Is there any way I can back this machine up, install Leopard, install VMWare and then load the virtual machine that I backed up?

Copy the folder that the VM is in. So under a typical installation, navigate to \User\Library\Application Support\VMWare Fusion\Virtual Machine. There should be a folder there that has your VM.

Granted that this isn't an Boot Camp partition, because that would be different.
