How to make "Side by Side"?

The effect in this video where one clip is shown in 3D to the left and reflects, and one clip is shown on the right at a smaller scale. What software and effect is used to create this?

I believe the latest version of iMovie can do this to some degree, but that version was probably done with Final Cut or one of the FCS apps.

I've been experimenting with iMovie '09, but haven't been able to find this function there.

I don't know if it can be done in imovie - you could probably make the side by side using one of the effects, but honestly, I don't know how - there is a "Missing Manual" book for imovie - if you have a borders or barnes and noble near by you may want to see if there is a copy there you can look at.

It can be done in both Final cut express and final cut studio.

Final cut express, you'd have to use some distortion, motion and some sort of mirroring to get the one shot of the IPhone, and with multiple layered tracks it'd be easy to get the speaker to be next to the first shot. One plugin you can get that would make at least part of it easier:

In Final Cut Studio, you can either do it through video effects within Final Cut Pro, or easier through Motion that comes with Final Cut Studio.

I couldn't find that effect in iMovie 09. The closest idea is picture-in-picture.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

you just need a program that can put video in layers.

Then it's just a matter of resizing/cropping those layers.

The newest version of Imovie doesn't really have layers though. you can only superimpose 1 video over another and you are also limited with your parameters.
