Powerbook just wants to sleep!

Whenever I shutdown my powerbook I have to wait until it turns itself off. If I put the lid down too early it goes to sleep only for me to return several hours later with it still sleeping. Then when I open the lid it carrys on the shutdown process and turns itself off- very annoying, is there anyway round this?

try closing all your programs first this will help with the shut down speed
