CD won't read

Okay, I insert a blank CD*, and when I do, this message pops up:http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj306/Mandokar/Picture4.png In case you can't get it, it says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", with the options "Ignore" and "eject". If I press ignore, the warning goes away, and I can't find the disk on the computer. If i press eject, well, it ejects. Please help me.

I would first try another brand of discs to see if it was the discs or the drive. Memorex are not the best out there, I would suggest (if you are going to a store) either Verbatim or Sony's (as long as they were made in Japan). If you want to order good discs you can get some Taiyo Yuden's.

As suggested, try a different brand of CD. Also, that Memorex 700 is probably old stock, since CD disk capacity has been at 800 Mb for a long time now. I can recommend the Fuji brand, also TDK.

Louishen has, asking you how you're trying to get to the Sys Prefs. There are two ways:
1. via the Applications folder, since the MacOS treats SysPrefs as an application.
2. via the Dock - but you need to have dragged the SysPrefs icon from the Applications folder to the dock, where it acts as an alias of SysPrefs.

Check your Applications folder first to see if System Preferences is there. It may have inadvertently been shifted or, or worst scenario, accidentally deleted (unlikely). Use Spotlight (top right corner of desktop) as well to search for the SysPrefs.
