I found a lot of threads about people using their macbooks as desktops, and worrying about it overheating with the lid shut. but how do you set it so it does not go into sleep when you shut the lid.

*note* i do have the fancy 'power saver' instead of the old power options*

i can handle a little coding/hacking, but not a lot.

You need a program like InsomniaX to disable sleep mode. I should warn you that in many cases, machines have overheated. I also believe I've read that the display doesn't turn off. This can be very detrimental to the longevity of the machine, particularly those parts that effected by heat (hard drive) or have a limited life span (CCFL tube in your display).

I agree with CWA. If you choose to try and use insomniax read the warnings that come along with the program.. You could also try sleepless. you can find it via www.macupdate.com
