Iphone music stops playing

My iphone music stopped playing today when opening any other app. I know some apps kill the music but its all the apps now. And when I click the mute button, it shuts off the music completely, whereas it would continue to play before. When the mute is on, its almost like it turns to the video out function, as there aren't volume controls. It appears as if the slider for the music is playing but no sound and no volume buttons. I'm using 3GS, with 4.3.5 iOS. Anyone dealt with this before? I've done a cold reboot.

Just wanted to follow up - plugged in headphones and it seemed to fix the problem for anyone with the same situation So disregard issue!
