I just want to add that, once you've changed preferences (or after an OSX update), you'd need to delete and add again dictionary & thesaurus widgets (if you use these in Dashboard), for them to display British English: mine switched to American English after Mavericks update, deleting them and adding back on, sorted this little problem.
