can't use external monitor since 10.9.2 upgrade

macbook pro late 2012, 16g ram, ssd drive
I was using a DellE228WFP for about a year until I upgraded to Mavericks. Now when I plug in the DIV adapter, both screens go blank. I've tried a different adapter and a different cord. My Sceptre monitor still works fine! Any ideas?
