Problems installing Windows Media 9

I am a very recent convert to Mac so please excuse my ignorance. I only recently came over from the dark side .

Anywho, I am trying to play windows media files on my iMac. I tried downloading VLC and Mplayer. Both play audio but neither play the video. I downloaded Windows Media Player 9 but I am unable to install it. I have Windows Media.sitx on my desktop but when I double click it I get the message "there is no default application specified to open the document". I am sure I am doing something wrong. Also, the installer in my apps folder does not help.

I would appreciate any help.

get the free stuffit expander install that then extract your .sitx (for a Winders person this is like a .zip or .rar file).
