Should I RAID or Drobo?

I'm in need of a secure way to archive my photos and am looking for a raid type system. a friend recommended Drobo to me and it seems too good to be true. Any thoughts on the matter?

Downsides to drobo: if it fails (and apparently they do sometimes), you'll have to buy another drobo enclosure and pray that your data is still there, as their file system is proprietary.

On the other hand, those types of horror stories are few and far between and the setup is much more practical for most typical users.

I use a D-Link DNS-323 dual-bay RAID NAS. It supports RAID 1 (mirroring) and has been very reliable for me. It's relatively inexpensive, uses a standard EXT2 filesystem and has a wealth of different app plug-ins that can expand functionality. It also has built-in iTunes server support, which is handy.

I have two 1TB Hitachi drives in it right now. I also stream a lot of video from it using a WD TV Live. Couldn't be happier with it, given the price.

I use a G-Safe from G-Technology. 2 x 2TB (Raid 1), works like a charm.
