Questions about installing a driver to read & write Windows external hard drive
I got a external hard drive for Windows. I believe it uses NTFS and to my understanding, Mac can only read it but not write it.

I heard that you can install a driver on the Mac so it can write on the external hard drive.

I just wondering where can I find the driver and install it?

    Thanks for any help!

    I have a Mac mini 2009 using 10.6.3

    15" MBP '06 2.33 C2D 4GB 10.7; 13" MBA '11 1.8 i7 4GB 10.10; 21" iMac '13 2.9 i5 8GB 10.10; 5s & 5c
First question is, why have you not updated your OS to 10.6.8?

The most recommended here is Paragon's NTFS for Mac - It's also the only one I've not seen any negative experiences with. Have used it myself since their first beta.

Check out the Mac bundles in case you might be interested in some of their other software also.

And I don't know that the Paragon software is going to work with 10.6.3.
I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
In the Windows world, most everything folks don't understand is called a virus.

It does work with Snow Leopard but just like the current implementation, it's not reliable and can cause corruption. I would stick with Paragon NTFS which does work reliably.

Do you need it to be formatted as NTFS? Why not format it for mac or even as exFAT?

I would not recommend formatting a drive to exFAT since just like other FAT formats, it's a non journaled file system. Which means recovering from errors can be more difficult resulting in the possible loss of data. NTFS and HFS+ are the file systems of choice.
