Question MBP 8GB+2GB existing =10GB RAM? Is it safe?
I have just bought a stick of 8GB ram, I was wondering when I put it in my late 2011 MBP can I leave the 2GB stick thats already in there in order to keep the slot full and have 10GB RAM? Would this harm or damage my MB?

It won't harm it but since Mac memory is dual channel you should be using two modules of the same type and size for maximum speed and efficiency. Buy another 8 GB module for a total of 16 GB.

I know that, but I mean should I take the 2GB out to just leave the 8GB in there and have a free slot, or just use the 2GB as a gap filler?

If you need 10gig of ram leave it in. If not than take it out. Macintosh computers run all the time with empty ram slots...no "gap filler" necessary.

Optimally it probably would have been better to install 2 x 4gig sticks of ram...but maybe you have plans to add a 2nd 8gig stick of ram...taking this computer to 16gig eventually.

I will eventually add another 8gig stick. My thought was, if it wont do any harm leave it in. However after reading your reply I do feel safe in knowing if I do leave it in nothing will happen to it. Thanks Nick
