My external hard drive is currently formatted Mac OS Extended [Journaled]. However, I want to use it to copy a video I have recorded and my DVR will only recognise ext3, FAT or NTFS. I don't want to use FAT as it limits the size [I believe]. Firstly, how do I format it as NTFS so that MAC will read and write to it? Secondly, I found on the web a program called MacFUSE which I understand will enable MAC to do so. Has anyone used this? Does it work OK?

If you have access to a PC running Windows, you can format the drive to NTFS using the Windows Disk Manager program. And yes, MacFUSE will enable your Mac to read and write to the drive.

Didn't want to needlessly start a new thread so....

Having real problems with a relatively simple task; formatting an external drive so that it's MS-DOS (FAT) to enabling it to be read by a PS3.

I've basically followed these guidelines - Guide: How to format an external drive to work seamlessly with Macs and PCs without third party software. | MacTip.net

All is well when erasing....

...but when it finishes I'm left with this;

The 232.9Gb drive shown in the pictures was formatted a while ago and works fine on a PS3. This is the info for the drives, the 232.9Gb drive on the left and the problem drive on the right.

I'm running a G5 Version 10.5.8

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Go to the Partition tab instead of the Erase tab.

Under Volume Scheme - select 1 Partition
Then click on the Options button and select Master Boot Record.

Now you can name the volume and go ahead with the format.
