External Hard Disk Drive problem

So I have this new External HDD and it was first used on a Windows. It was formatted as a NTFS. So whenever I put it on my Mac, i can only read but not write or copy anything. Now I don't care about the Windows part anymore, I just want to format it for MAC use only.

I know I should go to Disk Utility and partition it as a Mac journaled part.. Or even Erase the whole thing. I tried both actions and it always says "Unable to mount"

Any idea what I can do with this? It is really frustrating.

Your Mac's Specs
MacBook Pro 15" 2014, 2.2GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 250GB SSD, OSX 10.9.5 - iPhone 5s 16gb
Run Disk Repair and Permission Repair on the drive to see if that helps, if not then try a different USB port (they can be weird like that sometimes)
If these don't work then:
Plug it back into the windows machine and format it to FAT32, then plug it back into your Mac and try again.

I know it seems a bit silly but it's the only thing I can think of right now in all honesty.

Hope this helps
