Ok so I have an old laptop that I need to get data off the hard drive. The hard drive is a Samsung Spinpoint M5 HM160HC - Hard drive - 160 GB - internal - 2.5" - ATA-100 - 5400 rpm.

If I was to purchase this (Amazon.com: Adaptec 2.5 inch USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure Kit converts 2.5 inch internal ATA hard d ( 2188700 ): Electronics) would I now be able to use this as a portable external hard drive in which i was able to get the data from? I was figuring it would be a great way to use an old hard drive that has 160GB of storage space available.

If that enclosure won't work, what else can I do to use this old hard drive that is still good as an external hard drive?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Yes, there are any number of kits out there that will allow you to use it as an external hard drive. NewEgg.com is also a good source for these things.

I would just caution you on using Samsung drives in general to store data that you value. They have an unreal failure rate.
Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

So should I go with that external case or look for another?

Thanks for the heads up with the Samsung drives. This would just be for non-important files like music and movies for work.

That one looks pretty decent, and the price is right too. They're all pretty simple devices. It really comes down to aesthetics and the interface it provides (some have firewire interfaces, but USB is fine for most folks).

I found out sometimes you have to change the Hard Drive Jumper to get theses adapters to see the drive. I use one to reformat drives all the time.

Yes, with 3.5" PATA drives, you may have to change the jumper to Master or Cable Select. But that's extremely uncommon on laptop drives.

Yes ...10-4 .. I should of been more specific....the instructions in theses kits are sometimes not real clear. Sorry about that.
