7.1 sound card for new iMac
Am planning on getting the new 27" Imac that just came out. You would think for 3300 bucks shipped it would have a semi decent sound processor. Can one recommend a good sound card that can give me the following:
    7.1 channel output
    Dolby ProLogic
    DTS
    Dolby Digital Live
    24 bit digital audio
    etc....

Or, can anyone tell me how i can book up a home theater receiver to the Imac? Thanks for the advise

    Specs:
    iMac late 2007 10.11.b4, iMac 2008 10.10.5, Macbook2007 10.7.5, Mac Mini 10.7.5, iPhone 3GS Note 8!!
The Audio Output jack in back is both an Analog out and S/PDIF Digital out. I would just get a TOS LINK cable and hook that in to your receiver if your receiver has a TOS Link connector.

There are no PCI slots on the iMac as it's a thin all in one solution, so any sound card you would get would hook up either Via Firewire or USB 2.

I'm not really surprised. All iMacs come with the same sound processor...so the lowest end iMac at $1199 has the same sound processor as the $3300 dollar iMac you have configured.

The "extra bucks" for the $3300 computer are due to the:

    - 27" display
    - extra ram
    - better graphics hardware
    - larger hard drive
    - quad-core processor

...if there was a "better" sound processor available, then that would have been extra $$$ as well...and you would have had to configure it that way.

    Specs:
    15" MBP '06 2.33 C2D 4GB 10.7; 13" MBA '11 1.8 i7 4GB 10.10; 21" iMac '13 2.9 i5 8GB 10.10; 5s & 5c
Plus the fact that there is no commercial HD-DVD or Blu-Ray playback in OS X. They really are the only source of 7.1. Commercial DVDs typically max out at 5.1 and the sound card provided will pass through this 5.1 via the optical output.

To hook it up to your home receiver, you need a mini-toslink to toslink adapter or cable.
