The DVD player on my '08 Mac book pro seems to be broken. I can play cd's, but DVD's will not play at all.

If the drive is broken do some external dvd drives run off of a single usb port(data and power from the same port)?

    Thanks,
    Ross

    Specs:
    MacMini 2.4, 8 Gb, OS 10.10 and 10.6; MacBook 2.4, 4 Gb, OS 10.6.8
External drives should be powered externally, or you may have problems with insufficient USB-supplied power. The direct answer to the second part of your question though is "yes".

Put a known okay cd or dvd in the drive, and then open Disk Utility. Wait a little, and then see if the disk image appears in the pane to the left of DU's window. If not, then the OS is not recognising the drive, which suggests it's "toast".

Thanks for the reply. It seems that the drive is broken. Where is a good place to purchase a replacement internal drive for this machine?

Update: I used a drive cleaner on my dvd drive. This solved my problem.
    Thanks,

If in the future the drive has issues and you want a new one try OWC. I purchased a new DVD burner for my iMac G5 there. Great service and exact replacement.

Glad the cleaning fixed it for you though.
