i just got a seagate freeagent go 500gb. it is ntfs formatted.

whenever i plug the drive into my powerbook g4 (osx 10.4.11), nothing comes up in the disk utility or finder. but it appears in the system profiler.

the hdd works fine when i plug it into my windows pc and my windows laptop. i tried reformatting and plugging it in again to my g4 but to no avail.

does anyone have any suggestions? or should i return the hdd for a new one?

yes it is a USB drive. what do you mean by powered? its a 2.5" portable so it draws its power from the usb port...

I think its because of the USB controller on that G4. The USB standard limits the power output to 500mA. Some usb controllers are strict on this power limit, others are not

You may need a powered USB hub that allows more power to the drive to connect it to the G4
