This topic was posted in a different thread, but I have a slightly more difficult problem; in some languages (Hindi, for example), when written in the latin alphabet, you need to write a dot underneath certain letters, especially the letter "H." You can see that, for example, with the name on the first line of this page.

Could anyone walk me through a step-by-step guide of how to get a keyboard shortcut like "option+e" for the ´ accent over letters like é or á, but for a dot underneath letters instead? I don't know anything about "unicode," or how to implement it, whatever it is, but can follow instructions.

Thanks!

Nick

Welcome to Mac-Forums, omnigut.

Did you try going to System Preferences -> International and changing your keyboard language? That's about all I can see. Maybe someone else has a better idea.

most of the accents are option vowels - that's the easiest way to remember it

é (press option e then the letter you want, e in this case. optione then press a gives you á)

è (press e then option `, top left of keyboard next to 1) likewaise option ` then i gives you ì)

ü (option u then u)

â (option i then a)

otherwise a simple option a gives you å

option c gives you ç

option o gives you ø

The dot underneath the Ḥ must be unique to Persian, you could always copy it from Wikipedia and paste it in like me

edit: google Underdot os x - you should find some unicode fonts that support the underdot letters or some guidance in using hindic type languages in os x

Almost there, but...

Thank you for your post. I found this link for the unicode thing, but as I said before (and I know nothing about unicode), I don't know how to read or implement this information, or how to put it into my macbook. Could anybody help me place the "underdot" function on my keyboard?

Thanks!

I did a quick google search and thispage on unicode looks quite useful
It explains how to use the character palette to enter characters into apps that support unicode and also talks about keyboard layouts for OSX
I haven't tried them, but it looks like something worth trying and seems fairly palatable reading

Did you try activating in your System Preferences -> International -> Input Menu tab the Character Palette and the Keyboard Viewer?

See the screenies below.

Do you know how to get the tilde over a letter? As in "Não"?
Also I'd love the opt shortcut for é. I write in Portuguese a lot so these little keyboard shortcuts would be WONDERFUL!
