would it help speed my mac up by removing unused apps on the dock?

not if they're not running.

you'd be better off removing any folders you may have on your desktop (if any), since each, from what i've been told, acts as an open finder window.

the more components, the more memory is used.

even when dashboard is running with minimal components it takes up some memory.

a few of us have installed "stop" or "quit" widgets that allow you to bring dashboard to a halt, freeing that memory if you don't use dashboard a lot.

i use one called "DashQuit" search for it here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/
