    OS X resets some preferences
    Every now and then some of my preferences will reset (i.e. mouse, settings, and highlighting) and I don't know why. Is it something that I am doing unknowingly or is something else going on?

    Turn off FileVault for ur account and see if that helps.

    FileVault wasn't/isn't on.

    did you rename your home folder by any chance?
    Don't forget to use the new User Reputation System

    You can not rename your home folder....if you do OS X creates a new one and starts you off with new preferences
    Don't forget to use the new User Reputation System

    OK try repairing disk permissions
