So, I just got a Mac, and wanted to download Firefox. I did download it, but for some reason I can't get it to drag into the application folder. I open it in finder, and see the image to drag it over, but nothing happnes. Also I can only drag shortcuts to the downloaded file into my hard drive. I downloaded and saved Adium just fine, but firefox won't do it. Having to always have that downloaded file with the disc drive in the icon on my desktop is getting annoying. Anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks for your help.

Download the Firefox 2.0.0.4.dmg. Click on it and it will mount a drive icon on the desktop. Double click on that and it will open. Inside will be the Firefox application. Drag that into your Applications folder. Then close out the open DMG Disk Image and drag it to the trash. Click on Firefox in your applications folder to open Firefox. You can drag it also into the Dock.

Remember a DMG is an Disk Image file. It opens like an any image and the files are inside.

What you're dragging is not Firefox; it's a Volume (a.k.a. a drive).

The Volume is the DMG file when it's mounted.

(DMG = disk image
Volume = mounted drive, kinda like a CD or USB drive in My Computer on Windows)

It's inside the Volume that you'll find Firefox.

Here are detailed steps:

Actually, it's not the first time I posted these pictures; I had previously posted them in this thread.

I did it 'cause I know that I was pretty confused when I first had to understand how DMGs and installing works.

Oh yeah.
If anyone wants to use those pictures in a future thread, feel free to do so.

(fine print: In doing so, you sell 50% of your soul to me. ;p )

That is one of the most common questions I've answered to Mac newbies. To the new user it seems so difficult, but once you know how, it is so much easier to install programs than Windows.
