Im trying to install 10.4.8 on a G4 thats got OSX 9 on it. I put in the CD and it told me to restart, it restarted and i now have a screen with a grey background with a dark grey box saying restart

Over the top of that is a bunch of writing for example..

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E54BC): Unable to find driver for this platform: "Powermac3,6"

Darwin Kenel Version 8.84: SUn Oct 29 15:30:27 PST 2006; root:nxu-792.16.4.obj~1/RELEASER_PPC panic: we are hanging here

Hmmm i tried restarting and i get the same... what am i doing wrong?

Is the install disc a DVD? If so that's why it won't work. That DVD will only work on the Mac it came with....AFAIK

You can ring Apple and ask them to send you a Tiger install CD, which will cost though...

Are there any peripherals attached to the G4? Try it again with them removed.

Joe, all you can do is to remove the peripheral and try again....but you might find that the install disc (CD/DVD?) that came with your Mac Pro won't work. Tell me about the disc drive...is it an add on or an original that came with the G4?

tried removing USB - still the same - i also cant remove the disk either so now i'm a little screwed. how can i remove the CD from the drive? ive tried pressing eject but it only opens when in OSX itself not when booting up is my understanding?

Pulse - i dont know about the disk drive its an old g4 i found at work ive tried to get working! Im awaiting the company to buy the new macs but need a mac today to do some work so thought i would give this a try

The DVD's that came with your Mac Pro will not work on a G4. First a G4 is a Power PC CPU while your Mac Pro is Intel. Intel OSX will not boot on a PPC machine. Also Apple usually makes the install media that ships with a machine like your Mac Pro for that machine and it will not always work with a different mac. You will need a copy of OSX for the Power PC. Then it should install.

To get the CD/DVD out of the drive, hold down the Mouse button after the power button is pressed till the CD tray opens.

i'm guessing it won't work. those disks are for an intel mbp. they might not even work on a normal macbook much less something with a ppc.

edit: dtravis beat me to it - and much more authoritative at that!

Won't work. Those disks are model specific. You need to get a full install Tiger install disk, you cannot use your Mac Pro disk on another machine. Just like dtravis and eric said.
