    Question about Time Machine
I was wondering if anyone can answer a question I have about Time Machine.

If I have an 80 gb hard drive in my G4 PowerBook, how large of an external hard drive will I need to make Time Machine worthwhile? Obviously if I just had an 80gb drive it wouldn't work because it must need extra space to track the changes after the original imaging.

    Does anyone have any idea?

Unfortunately the detailed specs of Time Machine are hidden away behind marketing hype. When Leopard is released I'm sure a lot more information will be forthcoming.

Yeah, that's what I've discovered myself. I was more looking for an educated guess... I want to get an external hard drive now, but I don't want to get one and wish I'd gotten a bigger one later.

I imagine you'll be able to set how much drive space you want reserved for Time Machine, but I wish I knew how much was a good amount!

It'll probably vary greatly depending on how much stuff it's managing, and how often it changes. If you have 15GB in your /Users directory that hardly ever changes, you won't need much space for Time Machine. However, if you create and delete content a lot (e.g. create or copy it onto your drive, then offload it across the network) then that churn will require more hard disk space to store the various versions and short-lived files. It's really impossibly to tell until somebody gets their hands on it and produces some form of report

I would say the best way to buy a hard drive now and not worry about it later is to get the biggest hard drive you can buy.

I've heard some negative things in the past about Lacie drives, though...
