As far as I know the MIME settings are within Quicktime Prefs within System Prefs. Did the arcticle explain what they had to be set to?

I changed the Mail preferences from Rich Text to Plain Text and the jpg attachment problem disappeared. When emailed to Windoze machines, the jpgs now appear as attachments (in Outlook at least). I don't know what I lose by not using rich text, but I don't care.

This is the way to go! Bewdiful! Problem solved. Changed to plain text and now all my picks go out and can be opened. Many thanks for a simple solution

When I used Mail, I found a plug-in called Mail Attachment Iconizer helpful. It automatically converts attachments to icons and stores them in a manner more like Outlook does. It solved a lot of these type of issues.
