I've recently update my Mac OS to El Capitan. Since the update, some of the attachments are not being downloaded at all. I try to click the file but the only options available are copy and speech as you can see in the attached file.

Any ideas?

G'day and welcome to the forums.

You are running Office 2011, or the new Office 2016, on your Mac?

Can't open or view attachments in Mail (El Capitan)

I've started having exactly the same problems since upgrading from Yosemite to El Capitan.

PS: I'm running Office 2011 - not sure of the significance of the question.

The question was directed at the original poster not you. As you can see from his screen shot, the files shown are Office 2016 files.

hmap: are you seeing this in Mail? What about the web version of Mail? If it's not Mail, what email program are you using? What happens when you access the same account using a different email client?

Microsoft issued an update for Office 2011 in the last few days. make sure you are running version 14.5.6.

He's running Office 2016 Harry. And right now Office 2016 with El Capitan is seriously broken, however, I don't know if that has anything to do with him not being able to download attachments.

I may be pedantic but the OP should not be "downloading" the attachments at all they are already downloaded that's why they're called "attachments" it's saving/opening them that is the problem.
If ms office 2016 is not working in El Capitan we could say, well it's not 2016 yet.
Does dragging them to the desktop work at all?
Perhaps Open Office or Pages/Numbers might be a temporary workaround if they can be saved.
Also would be worth trying a different email client.

To clarify my own problem:
I use the Mail.app.
Since upgrade to El Capitan, the icons of attachments are showing as they did in Mavericks - but I can't open, save, or view them with 'quick look'. Applies to all file-types (.docx, .jpg,, .pdf etc). Oddly, older attachments that arrived pre-upgrade will still open.

When you mouse up the line between the address stuff and the content of the post, do you see a few buttons appear with various replay and save options?

Yes, I see the save/quicklook options, but nothing happens if I try selecting any of the file options. And the attempt doesn't appear to be generating any Console entries.

Thanks for input.

The attachment problem has been cured - I think - by the 10.11.1 beta update. The attachments received whilst I was running 10.11.0 did appear not not have downloaded properly. I suspect it may have been some sort of POP issue: although AOL theoretically uses IMAP, it also deletes messages that have been read automatically.

Even under 10.11.1, Mail on my machine still has a host of other problems (it's now reluctant to download new email, and the search function remains extraordinarily flaky) - but I can at least now open attachments.

Problems if you are running both the Beta and full release programs.

Just read that article and it sounds like my problem. When will we find out if they have a fix?

As I mentioned before, the problem was solved by the 10.11.1 update: Mail 9.1 is downloading attachments fine for me.

10.11.2 has now gone to beta - there may be more fixes on the way.
