    Software Update Laucher Hangup
Everytime I start up or restart my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.2) the machine gets hung up on an application called the Software Update Launcher. But this program doesn't launch anything. In fact I don't think there is any new software to be installed. Moreover, I can't quit the Launcher or even force quit it. Nor will the Launcher do anything else but sit there. The only way I can go around this is by physically shutting down the computer and starting up again.

Is there a fix for this problem?

G'day and welcome to the forums.

If you are actually on OS X.9.2, which is two updates old now, there are updates available. Start up again and download the OS X.9.4 Combo Updater and run that. It is just on 1GB in size:-

OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

When you see this problem, simply press the "Return" key to activate the updater and it will continue as per usual with the installation of the downloaded update. It will then shut down properly after it has done its update. Too easy.

I thank you deeply and sincerely. Agreed that it is simple. But "too easy" for whom? There is NO CLUE that is the action required. I went through every option in every pull-down menu, and -- nada. How did you know? Did you just hit every key until something happened?
