I have a Mac book pro from 2009, 4Gb RAM. I want to partition it so I can use Solidworks and ProE,. Will this installation mess up my mac? Any suggestions on what version of Windows I should install?

The first thing I would do is add 4 more GB of memory to your MacBook Pro. (It can take 8 GB of memory.) You didn't mention what size hard drive you have in it or how much space you would need for the Boot Camp partition?

As far as messing up your machine, why should it? Just follow the instructions given in the Boot Camp Assistant which is on your machine already. I recommend installing Windows 7 x 64 bit. Stay away from anything earlier such as XP or Vista, and well, Windows 8 being what it is, I would avoid that also. But that's just my personal opinion.
