Just keep your old one.

Have my old one with bootable backups so that I can still boot it up to 10.6 or 10.7.
Kept backups for 10.4 & 10.5 for a long time so i could boot to those for testing and helping out until I had everything moved to 10.6.

I wish! Not an option at this time due to some expensive memory repair needs.
Hard drive is good tho. Can I turn it into external USB 3 storage and boot from there?

None of the current gen Macs are likely to boot to 10.6.
Apple just doesn't continue putting out drivers for new machines for old versions of the OS.

You can keep the drive and use it externally, just don't plan on being able to boot from it.
I've tried booting to my bootable backups that work fine on my older machine and nada on the new one.

Other option is buy an older Mac for the single or few apps for which you find there just don't exist a newer app for 10.8.

I think that we need to know exactly what model MacBook Pro you have. Then we can probably offer some more specific solutions.
