Hi Everyone,

I am new to mac forums and would be an intermediate user at best. My macbook has recently ceased to function properly.

It takes forever to start up, the rainbow is constantly on. There is a different plain background. It takes about 10 minutes to do simple tasks (such as open a finder window). The hard drive seems to be working constantly. It is basically unusable to perform any task. Anyone getting my started on the right track would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Your thread title says "OS X No Longer Functioning". This is not really true...since from your post it is functioning...it's just no functioning well!

We do get lots of folks posting that their computer is not functioning at all...and this truly is a situation of "OS X no longer functioning".;)

I would recommend reading some of the links in my signature "Beachballs" and "Speedup". Lots of helpful suggestions there.:)

From your description, martin, I would strongly suspect that the hard drive is on its last legs. I would urge you to update your backups and replace the drive.

Yes, absolutely make that backup before trying anything else!
