I have been an IMac owner for about 2.5 years. I do voice work for media outlets in the US. I have noticed a lot of complaints about hum on the IMac. I am currently on the 10.8.2 operating system. I have tried everything to get rid of the hum with no success. Unfortunately this hum bleeds over into my audio recording I went to the genius bar at my local Apple store and he suggested it could need a fan replacement. Or perhaps it dust. Very disappointed in this product. It's a lot of money to spend and then endure this issue. Don't get me wrong. I have apple everything in my family. But The Apple product I spent the most on has been the biggest disappointment. This iMac was produced in 2009 and I purchased it in 2010 as the PC I owned was getting old. I never hum issues with the PC. Although I not a PC fan. I can say that I never had these kinds of issues with it.

I know next to nothing about the subject, but from the little I do know it seems you have more of a microphone issue instead of a Mac issue.

Can you tell us a bit more about what you are doing? Using a Microphone? How is it plugged into the iMac? Sounds like a Ground Loop issue. I have had that with PC hardware also.

Hum in Imac

My setup is this. EV Re20 Mic(standard mic in radio and tv). Hooked into a Mackie 1402VLZ(Main in and Out) plugged into back of IMAC. and my DAW or workspace is Adobe 5.5 Audition for Mac. I have also used an M audio fast track pro and have tried power conditioners as well for ground issues. It seems be coming from the IMAC(Hum).

Figured out the hum. My mic was picking up hum from my hard drive. Had to move the mic. Another issue I found. I had my main in and main out monster cable running from the mackie to back of iMac. I think the port has internal damage. From the 1/8 end of plug into Mac. I thought it was cable at first. But I think it's the Mac. Anyone ever have this happen? It's the port next to speaker plug in. It's not making contact which allows me to record.
