I have Java SE 6 Update 31 on my MacBook, and a test says it's working, but when I try to access a .xml file, I get an error message saying that the selected JRE is defective and that I should select another version or install a new JRE. Software update says all software is up to date. Please advise as to how I should proceed. Tx!

Are you saying that a Java program is trying to access an XML file and throws an error? If that's the case, it sounds like the application is broken and not the Java runtime. What application are you using?
