Since the 10.7.3 update (I believe) tried to install every time I restart or shutdown my Mac it goes to a software update screen. A completely grey screen with a few menus as the top. Most of the options are greyed out. There is an Apple icon and you can hit restart, or force quit but nothing happens.

Every update from now that requires a restart I need to download manually. Even during the restart I end up seeing this grey software update screen. Meaning the entire screen, not an application. My desktop disappears etc...

The only way to restart now is wait for this screen and hold the power button down.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried downloading the OS X.7,4 Combo Updater and running that?

Yes I've downloaded the install file and it updated fine.

Every time I restart the computer though it still goes to this software update screen and literally I have left it for days nothing happens. Blank grey screen with menu bar at the top.

You download Combos by going to the Apple web site and not using Software Update. Is this what you actually did as it should read OS X.7.4 in About this Mac.

Same issue with the 2013-004 update

I tried to download it again thinking it was corrupted but it didn't solve the problem.

Well as this is over a year old did you actually download the Combo updater by using the link provided?

Now of course the OS X.7.5 Combo is available so go to this link and try that:-

After several attempts and the deactivation of my login password, I ended up with the grey screen again.
Furious I pressed the space bar twice and... it went through the update it couldn't finish before !
Problem solved... I hope dr.zed will have the same "experience".
