Hey guys! Been running my Macbook Pro for a almost 6 months now and I love it! Last week I decided that I wanted to try and tweak the looks of it a little bit. I went and found Magnifique. I however couldn't get it to run properly and so gave up on it. I now seem to have developed a bit of a nusiance. Below is a screen of my desktop. The finder window no longer displays the names of my files, just the icons themselves, and any of my menus that I use now have kind of an odd color to them and lines running through as well. Was hoping one of you Mac geniuses here could tell me whats going on and how I might fix it. Thanks so much guys!!

We have had other users report difficulties with Magnifique. The only way that's safe to reinstate your Mac desktop and Finder to normal is reinstall.

Boot to your Recovery Partition (Command + R) and reinstall Lion. (assuming you're using Lion, if not, post back) The reinstallation will preserve your documents and data but will overwrite system files which should get rid of the effects of Magnifique. Be sure to run software update after reinstalling.

And start using Time Machine! :)

Do you use Time Machine?

Hi,

Actually, I want to use Time Machine, but I moved some really important files from my Windows PC over to my WD external for preservation, and Time Machine tells me that it wipes information on external drives clean before copying Mac files.

The Western Digital has 499.97Gb free.

Is there anywhere "in between?" So far (for 2 months) I've been telling it,
"Not now, I'll decide later."

Thanks.:)

One solution is to partition the WD hard drive. A partition for the Windows data and files, the other for Time Machine. In order to use Time Machine the partition or hard drive must be formatted to the Mac OS Extended Journaled file system.

This solution is even better: Buy another external hard drive and use it exclusively for Time Machine.

No need to apologize when the OP has finished with his replies as it appears he has. I would have reminded you if he hadn't. ;) But I do appreciate your concern and courtesy.

Hey Shev don't worry about it! If my thread can help you get help then its all good. As for the rest of you guys that have been replying sorry for my lack of comments. Been busy prepping for my parents 25th wedding anniversary party and mothers day. When I get some time tomorrow I will reinstall Lion and see what happens...and of course I will start using Time Machine.

Hi @chscag, sorry to interfere with this thread. I just want to ask you if it's possible to make a bootable lion installer in my thumb drive out of recovery partition. I've heard it's possible to make one but it is thru lion installer downloaded from AppStore. How can I make one using preinstalled lion in my MBP?

Thanks and sorry again guys.

I don't think it is possible from a recovery partition but you could just download a version of 10.7 and make a bootable thumb drive using this tutorial Make a Bootable Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Installer from a USB Flash Drive

You can just download OSX somewhere other than the appstore.
