Hello everyone. I am wanting to restore my 15 inch Macbook Pro to factory settings. The problem I am having is when I insert my MAC OS X Installation DVD. The MAC OS X Installation DVD box appears. I double click on Install MAC OS X. I then see a disc icon bouncing on my dock for 4-5 seconds. Nothings else happens. There is not a larger box that comes up with the choice of Utilities or Continue. I have even clicked on the bouncing disc icon bouncing on my dock with no avail. Any ideas?

Are you trying to prepare the machine for sale? Reason for asking is that generally restoring a machine to the way it shipped from the factory is not necessary even when selling it.

What install disk are you using? Version of OS X? And, is it the original disk that shipped with your machine?

No. I am not selling it. Trying to fix a problem with my wireless card. All of a sudden it says I do not have a card installed.

Does the wireless card show up in the system profiler (accessed through  menu > about this mac

If it is not showing there then it may be broken or become disconnected from the motherboard

OK. Try a SMC reset to see if that works to get the card on line again. Also reset the PRAM.

Member louishen is probably right. Your Airport card probably has failed and needs to be replaced. You can buy a new one from several places on the net, however, removing the old one and installing the new one can be difficult.

Go to iFixit: The free repair manual and have your model number on hand. They have instructions for changing one out. They may also have the part on hand. If not try the folks at powerbookmedic.com.

The disk you are using is probably a older version of the OS you are now running, as you have done updates to the original OS. In that case the current OS does not want you to install Over The Top of what is now installed to an older version.

To really Reset the system back to As Shipped From Factory you need to Boot the computer off that original install DVD. Then Wipe the drive, Run Disk Utility from the install DVD and Erase and or Repartition the drive as one partition then do the install of the original OS.

That was what I am trying to do. The original disc does not get to the step where I can choose utilities or continue. The problem I am having is when I insert my MAC OS X Installation DVD. You have to Reboot the computer. Trying to run it from INSIDE your present OS is not the right way to do this.

Insert the DVD, Go into Sys Preferences then Startup Disk and select the DVD as the startup disk. The Reboot.

Or restart the computer and hold down the Option key. That will get you a screen where you Select the disk you want to start from. Select the DVD disk.

THANKS!! CHSCAG and SHOOTIST Thank you so very much. Inserted the DVD, Went into Sys Preferences then Startup Disk and selected the DVD as the startup disk. I then restored to factory specs and my AirPort Card is working again. :) Thanks again.

Just for future reference. You probably didn't need to "restore to factory specs"...and if by that you mean you reinstalled the OS.

There was probably a corrupt (or possibly missing) preference file or cache file...and if you run a maintenance program like "Onyx"...it most likely could have straightened things out. Or at least something to try before going thru the hassle of reinstalling the OS.

Download OnyX for Mac - Mac OS X maintenance and optimisation tool. MacUpdate.com

In any case...great to hear that things are working!:)
