Question Word: Mac 2008 and Endnotes
I'm writing a Master's thesis for my online Master's degree and the formatting style required insists on endnotes instead of footnotes and insists that they be in Arabic numerals (1,2,3,4) instead of Roman numerals (i,ii,iii,iv). I found how to change that on my Mac and the paper looks good. But when I post the document to the Blackboard website and people (to include myself) download the document from there, something has reverted the endnotes to Roman numerals. Does anyone know how to stop this? My professor keeps telling me to change my endnotes to Arabic numerals and keep trying to tell him that I have, but when I upload the paper to the website, it converts it back to Roman numerals. Thanks in advance for the help.

I think the problem may be on the other end. By default (at least for Word 2011), Word defaults to Roman style numbering. I just changed it to Arabic numerals, saved it, closed it and reopened it. Upon doing so, I had a document with Arabic numerals. It would seem then that once it is set, all is well.

My guess therefore is that the end user (in this case your professor) has their copy of Word set to Roman numerals. I can't be certain as I have no other machine to test this one (nor am I using Word 2008 anymore). Instead of trying to explain this to the prof, why not just upload a PDF? The document will be written permanently and thus, this shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you vansmith. I have noticed the same thing. Anytime I open the original file on my side, it opens with Arabic numerals. The issue seems to be when anyone downloads the file from the Bb website and opens it, to include myself. The PDF is a great idea and may be what I have to do on the final submission, but right now I have to submit an editable document b/c my classmates and prof are required to critique and comment on the document w/in the document itself. Thanks again for your help though!

Ah yes, you have to love the critiques. That's my favourite part of handing in a document.

Are you sending them the files as docs instead of as docxs? You're not alone in this issue (see here) and some hint at this being caused by the "downgrade" to the old doc format.

I am sending them as docs instead of docx. I'll try saving as a .docx and see if that works. Thanks!!!

I understand the hesitation about sending docx files but that format was introduced with Office 2007 back nearly five years ago (it was Jan. 2007). At this point, I think it's reasonable to assume that the end user has a version of Office that will support it (two versions for each operating system have had docx support).
