    incorrect file and folder counts
Hello all, new here and hope to get some help

I have to repair my disk almost twice a day. There will always be an incorrect file and folder count where one will be too high and the other too low. I can repair this as many times as I like it keeps coming back. Also, it happens with all my startup disks (3) both internal and external. Is this a documented phenomenon? Can anything be done about it?

    Thanks!

    Cheers, Bob.

    Welcome to the forums.

Can you share a bit more info, like what operating system you have and what application you use that shows you the incorrect number .
    Also what folder ?

Sometimes, files and folders are hidden for a reason.

I am also interested to know why you decided that the numbers are not correct ?

    Cheers ... McBie

    Hello,

I am on operating system OSX 10.6.8 on a MacPro 3.33 GHz 6 core with 16GB RAM

Both Disk Utility when verifying the disk, and Drive Genius 3 give me the error and say that the disk has to be repaired.

The incorrect numbers are given when running repair.

I do not know what folder or file is incorrectly counted.

    Thanks, cheers, Bob.

Starting to sound like a bad hard drive (but could be bad RAM, bad motherboard or just corrupted system file too :-( ).
Make sure you have a backup of important files!!!

First thing I'd try is erase and reinstall OS X.

Bad hard drive is doubtful as it would have to be 3 bad hard drives
I have reinstalled everything already, makes no difference
RAM passes all tests as being OK
BAD motherboard, wow, that could be it of course

    Thanks! Cheers, Bob

Got your original system install discs? Pop in disc one, reboot and hold down "D" after the chime to access Apple Hardware Test and run extended mode. That checks everything out including logic board, graphics, memory etc. Have you booted from your current system disc and run Repair Disk in Disk Utility? To do this pop in the DVD, reboot and hold down 'C' immediately after the chime, go to Utilities in the Menu Bar after selecting language, and open Disk Utility from there.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

I ran extended apple hardware test and the conclusion was all is well, no problems found.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to live with it

    Thanks all!

To further eliminate the hard drives as source of the problem, try something like SMART Reporter:
SMARTReporter for Mac - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Thanks, but I regularly run disk utility and then smart gets executed, no problems so far. I also have Drive Genius and Techtool Pro, everything is always OK except for that strange file/folder count, which by the way also gets reported by disk utility.
