I had this problem a few months ago and was never able to fix it. I have my work email set up on my iphone and ipad and they work perfectly, but when I try to set up an exchange account on my macbook pro, it says that it's offline. Why am I not just able to add the exchange account like I did on my other idevices?

iOS devices support Exchange 2003, 2007, 2010.

Mac Mail only supports 2007 and 2010. Perhaps the in-house mail server is 2003?

Also iOS supports active sync while Mac Mail uses Exchange Web Services just like Outlook 2011 for Mac. This needs to be enabled on the Exchange server and may not be.

Can you confirm the Exchange version?

I'm 99% sure it's 2007. Is there a workaround to get it online?

Do you know if your organization uses trusted third party certificates or do they use an internal self signed certificate?

If it is the later than you would need to install the certificate in your keychain and set the trust settings to always.

Can you get to the webmail site? Maybe something like,...

https://mail.emaildomainname.com/owa

That URL example is not always the case but is a fairly common example.

This would tell you if the cert was trusted or not as any browser would warn you that the cert used to secure the site was not a third party cert.

I can go to the outlook website and get to my mail that way. How do I download the certificate? Is there a site where I can get it? Sorry, I don't know much about this subject. Thanks

Sorry, I'm unclear. When you go tho the webmail site you get a security warning that lets you continue or you don't get a security warning at all?

I can go to the Microsoft Outlook Web Access site and retrieve my mail that way. I don't get a warning, I am able to put in my username and pw and log in. It is, however, 2003 and not 2007 as I previously thought.

Then that is the answer. You would need to install and use Entourage 2008 without EWS (not home and student) in order to get MS Exchange 2003 delivered to an email client on the Mac.

Wrong!!!

Outlook 2011 is only supported by Exchange 2007 SP 1 RU 4... If you want to use Exchange Web Services...

You can use IMAP or POP to connect Outlook 2011 to an Exchange 2003 mailbox. You will need to contact your system admins for the POP/IMAP settings (accounts have to be enabled to use these). Once you have the information, simply add a POP/IMAP account into Outlook 2011 and you should be GOOD TO GO!

Let me know if you have any questions!!!

I got the mail working as an imap account, but I can't send mail. I tried a few different outgoing ports, but it still won't work. We really don't have an IT guy, but I asked the person who set up the email and they didn't know what port to use. Any ideas?

I would strongly advise against either POP or IMAP.

And in your heart of hearts,....you would too.

So I guess you meant to say you almost got it working.

Default email ports

POP3 - port 110
IMAP - port 143
SMTP - port 25
HTTP - port 80
Secure SMTP (SSMTP) - port 465
Secure IMAP (IMAP4-SSL) - port 585
IMAP4 over SSL (IMAPS) - port 993
Secure POP3 (SSL-POP) - port 995

Very Good Sir!

Yes, those are the default ports. Very rarely will a provider stray from the above. Their SMTP server may also require an authentication method. See if you currently have 'Use the Same authentication for my Outgoing as my Incoming' checked.

I currently have 143 and 993 set for my IMAP account. My server is bigbox.COMPANYNAME.com and that is the same for both income and outgoing--not smtp. The mail sets up easily on my iphone and ipad, but not on my computer. I even tried thunderbird and that doesn't work.

Funny, thought I was trying to be helpful.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. Check and see if your outgoing mail server requires authentication (even though its the same server, the Virtual Servers used in Exchange 2003 can have different settings).

If you have access to your Exchange server,

1. Open Exchange System Manager
2. Open your first administrator group
3. You should see Servers
4. Under servers, navigate to SMTP
5. Right click on Default SMTP Virtual Server, and go to Properties
6. Click Access
7. Click Authentication

What are the settings here? If Basic authentication is required, you will need to "Use the same credentials for your Outgoing Server as your Incoming Server" This should be a setting in your mail app. If TLS is required, use SSL.

If you do not have access to your Exchange Server, you will need to contact an admin or just enable/disable the settings listed above in your client. You may find something that works.

My IT guy said that we won't be able to correctly connect to outlook correctly because our server is old and the cert is wrong or something like that. Does that sound right?

Yeah, That could do it. Exchange 2003 and Windows Server 2003 both are not too old, I have used Outlook 2011 with Exchange 2003 before. Its not the... best... But it certainly works.

You can update your cert, it can cost money.
