Why's it doing that?

i have a big problem that so far has defied any attempt i have made to solve it. To explain, and this may be anathema to some, i play Second life, and i have very recently had trouble with my connection. Until two or three days ago i was connecting to second life using the Phoenix viewer, and had experienced on problems at all. Out of the blue though, i connected to second in the same way i always do, and all **** broke loose. If i tried to type anything, it hung, and the spinning wheel came on for two or three minutes, my avatar and any others were partially greyed out, it was impossible to open anything up and eventually i gave up. I tried connecting again, same problem, i re booted same problem. I contacted Pheonix and second life, no useful responses. I deleted second life and phoenix and installed clean versions, same problem. I tried other viewers, same problem. I called Apple who said it had to be a second life or Phoenix issue. I decided to re install Snow Leopard, and tried connecting again, same problem. I then tried doping a clean install of Leopard 10.5, and i could connect to second life using the Pheonix platform with no problems. I then upgraded to 10.6 from the install disc and, same problem, the connection was as bad as ever. I am now running Leopard 10.5, because it is the only way to connect to second life. but i would like to use Snow Leopard. I figure that it may be that if i do a clean install of Snow Leopard i will be able to connect to second life, but of course the snow leopard install does not give the option to do a clean install. I have read various ways to do this clean install, but i cant seem to manage the methods that rely on using the disc utility on the disc, cant actually find the utility. SO! anyone have any idea why this is happening, because the only thing i can think of is that i have picked up some bad stuff somewhere. Has anyone had similar problems and if so what was the resolution, if any. And if i dont get this resolved soon i have this gun and all i need is someone to tell me to loint it at my Mac and not my head. Info on my machine follows

I decided to use this as an excuse to give Second Life a whirl. First off, running 10.6.8 on an iMac 11,2 and the Second Life app seems to work just fine. Ditto for Phoenix Viewer. So… I think this safely rules out an incompatibility with the OS, which means something is awry on your system. A couple things to start with:

1. Try playing using the regular Sec Life app and through the Phoenix viewer. Is there a difference?
   
2. Create a new user account on your Mac, log in to that, then try both apps. Any difference?
   
3. Run the Apple Hardware Test. There is the off-chance your graphics card is faulty, and it's only apparent using Snow Leopard's drivers.

It would also be helpful to know if you've upgraded the RAM yourself. Please report back and we can go from there.
