I have MacBook that runs on tiger. I just bought mac OS X Snow leopard that says new version 10.6.3 for $29.99.
When I inserted SL install DVD, my macbook would not recognize the dvd. restarting and holding on the option button would not work either.

I searched online and found some people saying that SL works when doing a clean install. so i decided to backup all my datas and do a clean install of SL.
but the problem is, I lost my OS X tiger install dvd.

Is there a way to format my OS X 10.4.11 without the original dvd (that came with the macbook when i purchased it)?

Would a clean install of SL work? or is it possible to install SL without doing a clean install (meaning, an upgrade)?

please help, thank you.

Two things:
1. Is the SLpd dvd the full retail version (as opposed to a Mac model-specific one)?
and
2. Hold the C key (not Option) down when you reboot the Mac with the SLpd disk in the drive.

i don't quite understand the difference between the two you have mentioned.
if you're asking if it's a Snow leopard family pack then no and it is not a Snow leopard box set either. The one i have is Snow leopard single user.
I believe that snow leopard single user is suppose to work just fine for tiger.
am I wrong about this?

2. Hold the C key (not Option) down when you reboot the Mac with the SLpd disk in the drive.

I've just tried that but it didn't work... seems like my macbook doesn't recognize the install DVD at all. is this because i have not formatted my mac?
would it work if I clean install snow leopard?
or does it have to do with the snow leopard i've purchased(the single user)?

thanks for your help but need further help!
please help! D-:

Is your SL disc a retail (off-the-shelf) version? Or is it from someone who owns a newer Mac and it is the install disc that came with their Mac? If it is the disc that came with a new Mac, it will only work with the Mac that it shipped with. It won't work with any other Mac.

That is the difference between the two types. Either one that is bought from the store, or one that ships with a purchased Mac.

I have a store bought (off-the-shelf) single user Snow Leopard that is white with a picture of a snow leopard. So it is a full retail version.

Any advice on what I should do to make the Snow Leopard install DVD to work?
My mac 10.4.11 would not recognize the install DVD. Holding on C does not work.
And I would like to know if I should format my hard drive first to make it work.

help needed, thanks.

No, you don't need to format your HDD first.

You could try making a Genius Appointment at your nearest Apple Store. They can try it for you and see if it works for them. If it doesn't, they should have some suggestions for why it won't. Maybe it's just a bad disc and you need a new one? I don't know.
