Absolutely no idea what could have gone wrong as this is a new one on me, but I am desperate to fix it. i work from home and I have a new project in the works and keep my working files on my desktop!! DESPERATE

Dear Kathryn,
I am writing you at this point to let you know that you are an idiot. Maybe - just maybe - if you had not chosen for your desktop image a screen shot of your desktop (taken to send to someone else yesterday) albeit by mistake, you would not be annoying people on this forum by claiming that some upgrades had messed up your computer! tsk... tsk...
Kudos to you for figuring it out on your own - finally - but in the future please try and do so before running with hands waving in the air, screaming for help to the MacForum.
Just as well no one paid you any attention :)
All the best,
Myself - Kathryn

You are not annoying us Kathryn and it is great you have worked your problem out and what makes you think you would be the only one to ever have done this? Keep coming back eh?

Not to worry, you are not the only idiot on this planet, many share or even have monopolised that position and title. Just the other day...
:)I have had in many instance, had the honor of gaining that title.
